Sanlorenzo and MAN join forces in the name of sustainable yachting

27 January 2025

During this year’s edition of the Boot show in Düsseldorf, Sanlorenzo has presented a truly innovative project, developed in partnership with marine technology brand MAN, which will see the realisation of the very first green methanol bi-fuel propulsion system. The project is part of the Group’s own Road to 2030 strategy and will be installed on board the new 50 X-Space.

“Favouring innovations aimed at sustainable mobility and yachting is not an option. Now more than ever before, the industry and infrastructure services are tasked with the delicate role of promoting a development of the sector that must be as sustainable as possible, leveraging the collaboration of all the players involved,” commented Cavalier Massimo Perotti, Executive Chairman and CEO of the Sanlorenzo Group and a former President of the Italian Marine Industry Association.

The new propulsion system, which will reduce emissions during navigation by up to 70%, anticipates and exceeds global and European regulatory standards and aims to create the first carbon neutral vessel by the end of the decade.
“We are thrilled to be able to further contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions in this project through bi-fuel methanol propulsion, in cooperation with Sanlorenzo and our other partners,” emphasised Mikael Lindner, Director of MAN Engines.

The new project involving Sanlorenzo and MAN on the topic of sustainability is not the Group’s first. In 2024, Sanlorenzo launched two revolutionary models: the 50Steel, the first yacht in the world to be equipped with a green methanol Fuel Cell system to generate electricity which is channeled to power the onboard hotellerie equipment, and Bluegame’s BGH-HSV (Hydrogen Support Vessel), the first chase boat with exclusively hydrogen propulsion, used by two teams participating in the 37th edition of the America’s Cup in Barcelona.
