+20% INCREASE IN TURNOVER FOR A VALUE OF 7.33 BILLION EUROS IN 2022
EXPORTS OF BOATS AND YACHTS REACH AN ALL-TIME HIGH OF 3.74 BILLION EUROS IN JUNE 2023 AND ITALY RANKS WORLD FIRST AMONG EXPORTING COUNTRIES
Today at the 63rd Genoa International Boat Show, during the Boating Economic Forecast conference, the new edition of Nautica in Cifre – LOG, the statistical yearbook produced by the Italian Marine Industry Association’s Research and Market Intelligence Department in partnership with the Edison Foundation, and boasting the patronage of the Italian Ministry for Infrastructures and Transport.
The event kicked off with greetings from Saverio Cecchi, President of the Italian Marine Industry Association: “As anticipated this morning during the inaugural conference for our institutional representatives and guests, the estimates made at the beginning of the year by our Research and Market Intelligence Department concerning the trend of the yachting industry in 2022 turned out to have been accurate: the sector has even surpassed the 7 billion euro turnover threshold, a value never reached before. The Italian Marine Industry Association can look back with pride on the success achieved by its companies, led by passionate entrepreneurs who are equally proud to belong to an industrial sector that always has its eyes on the future, demonstrating the authority and strength that characterise the industry’s leadership in producing excellence for all the seas of the world“.
“Following in the wake of 2021, the year with the highest increase in turnover ever recorded, the market during 2022 has in fact proved to be just as solid and responsive, reaching a global turnover of €7.33 billion, up 20%,” stated Stefano Pagani Isnardi, Head of the Italian Marine Industry Association’s Research and Market Intelligence.
The ongoing global economic and political state of uncertainty, which may lead to a normalisation of the sector’s growth rates in the future, has therefore not dampened the favourable winds for Italian boatbuilding production, which continued to blow throughout the nautical year that has just come to an end, especially in the superyacht sector, for which Italian shipyards account for 50% of world orders.
The actual number of employees rose to 28,660, confirming the positive employment trend (+8.8% compared to the previous year) that has characterised all sectors of the industry across the board, an effect that has trickled down into and through the nautical tourism chain.
The yachting sector’s contribution to the country’s GDP was over €6.1 billion in 2022, an increase of about 20% compared to last year. The weight of the yachting industry’s contribution to GDP in relation to the national GDP also grew, from 2.89‰ in 2021 to 3.23‰ in 2022, steadily increasing since 2013 and rising sharply in the last two years, showing the sector’s higher growth rate relative to the national economy.
As pointed out by Prof. Marco Fortis, Director and Vice-President of the Edison Foundation, the sector’s driving force has once again proved to be exports, which continue to strengthen year on year: “Italy, the world’s leading exporter of boats and yachts, has reached an all-time high of €3.74 billion for the sliding year ending June 2023. It should be remembered that in 2022 Italian exports of yachting units reached a share of 18.3% of the global figure and 88% of national shipbuilding production is directed abroad,” Fortis pointed out.
In this phase of expansion, the markets that have recorded the most interesting growth rates in 2022 compared to the previous year are clearly traditional markets: among non-EU countries, the USA consolidates its supremacy as the main importer of yachting units produced in Italy, with a 57% increase; the United Kingdom shifts into second place with a doubling of imports (+108%).
In his closing statement, Riccardo Honorati Bianchi, Cassa Depositi e Prestiti SpA, presented the new Business Matching platform for internationalisation created by CDP Cassa Depositi e Prestiti aimed at medium and small enterprises to guide and support them in their promotion activities abroad. The new tool is based on an algorithm specifically designed to focus on the yachting sector.
