Genoa Boat Show

THE AFTERNOON EVENTS OF FRIDAY 23rd SEPTEMBER AT THE GENOA INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW

24 September 2022

TECHNICAL SEMINARS AND THE EASTERN WATERFRONT PRESENTED IN THE BLUE PAVILION

SUSTAINABILITY, SPORT AND PHOTOGRAPHY AT THE HEART OF THE EVENTS AT THE EBERHARD & CO. THEATRE

A clear focus on coastal protection, innovative solutions, and the relative regulatory framework took centre stage at the seminar “Come ripensare l’ancoraggio: Sicurezza, protezione fondali e soluzioni disponibili” (Rethinking anchoring: safety, seabed protection and available solutions) organised by Atena Lombardia with the patronage of the Italian Marine Industry Association, in the Forum Hall located in the Blue Pavilion. Marco Donà, Managing Director of Atena Lombardia, the Italian Marine Technology Association, and member of the Lombardy General Confederation of Industry Accessory Board, explained: “We wanted to draw attention to the issue of anchoring, which, statistics in hand, is responsible for around 90% of accidents at sea. Our aim is to bring solutions that can offer crews and ship owners useful information so that problems do not occur, and at the same time to understand what the market offers in terms of technological proposals.

Laura Occhiodoro of RINA, Massimo Fabozzi of INSER, Roberto Perocchio of Assomarinas, Thomas Frizlen of AnchorGuardian, and Michele Blengio of ZF Padova all spoke about classification rules, marinas, smart systems, and dynamic positioning as an alternative to dropping anchor for short breaks.

This year’s ‘Coffee with the President’ event at the Press Centre also took place: this afternoon the Vice-President of The Italian Marine Industry Association, Andrea Razeto, met with journalists to take stock of the most pressing issues of the industry and the Boat Show’s progress. “In these first two days of the Show we have seen an important turnout of visitors, including from abroad” – underlined Razeto. “The Boat Show represents a strategic tool for companies and, thanks to the Italian Trade Agency’s support, we have been able to amplify international promotion activities with the international press and buyers project which has brought in the most important industry professionals and specialised foreign press “.

The Terrace of the Blue Pavilion was the venue, starting at 2.30 pm, for the presentation of the current progress of the new Eastern Waterfront. Representatives of the local authorities, including the Mayor of Genoa Marco Bucci, President of the Liguria Region Giovanni Toti, the Deputy Mayor of Genoa Pietro Piciocchi, and the private investors involved in the project, Massimo Moretti General Manager – CDS Holding, and Corrado Trabacchi – Orion Capital Managers, together with Alessandro Campagna, Sales Manager of the I Saloni Nautici, who hosted the event, took the floor for greetings and opening statements.

Giovanni Toti, President of the Liguria Region: “We have seen this project grow: we see its value, which is that of creating expectations for the future. A positive wind has been blowing in Liguria for a few years now, and we are breathing it in this Genoa Boat Show. The new Eastern Waterfront, a piece of public heritage that is being transformed, truly sums up this fervour”.

Marco Bucci, Mayor of Genoa: “This is a feat of urban regeneration for the city that will be a landmark of the city. This is the Genoa we want. Between now and 2024 we will continue to see new changes with regards to berths, with 200 more to be created in time for the next Boat Show, a large park, a residential area, and hospitality.”

Pietro Piciocchi Deputy Mayor of Genoa: “The Genoa Model is also about carrying out multiple projects at once, and those who experience the complexities of a construction site like that of the Genoa International Boat Show together with both public and private projects are witnessing a small miracle every day.”

Massimo Moretti General Manager-CDS Holding: “The project, designed by Renzo Piano, in which we are investing almost 300 million Euros, is an incubator of a new economy for the city, recovering portions of the sea for Genoa, with moorings dedicated to the world of yachting. A Mediterranean park, a pole with 9 thousand square metres of photovoltaic panels, and a thalassothermal centre are planned to be a part of the new Waterfront. Buildings will also include residences, businesses, sporting facilities, offices and hospitality.”

Corrado Trabacchi, Orion Capital Managers: “With the capital raised, Genoa will be recognised worldwide for a project that is exciting everyone. Bringing in investors was not hard: the Waterfront project has generated so much enthusiasm because it combines important aspects, first and foremost sustainability.”

EBERHARD & CO. THEATRE

It was an intense afternoon full of ideas at the Eberhard & Co. Theatre, the event space that offers the public a series of exclusive events every day.

The afternoon session opened with a presentation dedicated to the next 69F class racing season, the ‘flying boats’ officially presented in 2019 at the Genoa International Boat Show and which have become a reference point in the world of ‘foiling’. Giorgio Benussi, joined on stage by Roberto Lacorte and Alessio Razeto, stars of the 69F’s first seasons with the FlyingNikka team, and by the young athlete Mattia Cesana, presented a packed 2023 calendar for the Persico 69F, the only monohull, one-design, crewed foiling boat on the market today. 18 events on both sides of the Atlantic, divided into four circuits: the 69F Cup (Europe and America), the Youth Foiling Gold Cup, and, a new entry, the 69F US Foiling Select Series requested by American Magic to select their youth crew to take part in the Youth America’s Cup in 2024. The boat is in fact very similar to the AC40, the boat on which the regattas of the prestigious trophy for young and female sailors will be contested.

During the event RINAUTIC – La nautica che verrà (RINAUTIC – The Future of Yachting), organised by RINA Services, boating and sustainability were the main topics discussed with the contribution of the main Italian trade press representatives, Franco Michienzi, Antonio Vettese, Maurizio Bulleri, Roberto Franzoni, Alberto Mariotti, and the intervention of RINA’s Marta Galletti and Giorgio Gallo. Awareness was raised about the need to adopt responsible behaviour and reduce consumption, through the construction of more efficient, smooth-running and lightweight hulls, while at the same time highlighting a number of issues inherent to the same theme that deserve further in-depth analysis.

This was followed by the presentation of “Surfing among the Ocean’s giants: an interview with Hugo Vau”, a book written by journalist Fabio Pozzo, a guest at the Genoa International Boat Show alongside Vau himself. The 208-page book focuses on the feat achieved on 17th January 2018 by Vau, a Portuguese big wave rider who tow-in surfed the largest wave ever in Nazarè, the Big Mama, which forms in front of the cliff of the famous lighthouse. A beautiful story, which mesmerised the many visitors present at the Eberhard Theatre.

The programme of events then ended with the presentation entitled ‘Carlo Borlenghi: my NFT collections’, an overview of the history and works of famous photographer Carlo Borlenghi, a landmark of nautical photography for over 40 years, now having landed in the NFT space, the last frontier of digital photography.

This evening the Design Innovation Awards will be presented to the winners of the Award’s third edition, as part of the Gala Dinner of the 62nd Genoa International Boat Show, a Charity evening in favour of Genoa’s Giannina Gaslini Children’s Hospital.
