LIFE MYSTIC (Methanol for Yachting Sustainable energy Transition applied to Internal Combustion engines) is a key project that Sanlorenzo has presented during an event at its headquarters in La Spezia. Developed in collaboration with Nanni Industries and Ranieri Tonissi, this particular project is intended to build the world’s first bi-fuel green methanol superyacht, scheduled to see the first light of day by 2027.
The presentation took place during a dedicated event entitled “The first bi-fuel methanol superyacht and the management of alternative fuels in Italian marinas”. The project, which kicked off last June, will last 54 months and will involve a total investment of over €4.8 million, 60% of which will be covered by European funds obtained under the “Circular Economy and Quality of Life” funding initiative of the LIFE programme.
The aim of the LIFE MYSTIC project is to test engines and generators for superyachts fuelled by a combination of diesel and methanol, and following this testing phase important results are expected to be found in terms of reduced environmental impact relating to greenhouse gas emissions (150 t/y CO2eq), relating to fossil primary energy consumption (700 MWh/y) and to air quality contamination: 630 kg/y.
LIFE MYSTIC plans to house two MAN diesels on board a superyacht, in collaboration with Ranieri Tonissi as the project’s partner developer, and two diesel generators made by Nanni Industries adapted to operate using bi-fuel green methanol – diesel.
LIFE MYSTIC is part of the “Road to 2030” plan with which Sanlorenzo aims to become a true pioneer in environmental sustainability, and represents a fundamental step along the path that has recently seen the launch of the 50Steel (pictured), the first superyacht in the world to use the Reformer Fuel Cell system powered by green methanol to generate electricity, and which aims to launch the world’s first carbon neutral vessel by 2030.
