Not a new gozzo this time but an initiative to protect the sea. This commitment will be promoted by the shipyard Cantiere Sciallino on Monday 23rd September at this year’s 64th edition of the Genoa International Boat Show.
In cooperation with Nuova C. Plastica, the Sciallino yard will be distributing the Marino container free of charge, a container made of certified recycled plastic to be used for the recovery of exhausted cooking oil. With this initiative Sciallino, which with its shipyard in Ceriale, in the province of Savona, will further amplify its commitment to watch over the western Ligurian Riviera, and the areas within the Pelagos Cetacean Sanctuary, intends to invite sea lovers to do what they can to protect this area of sea located evenly between so many destinations in Sardinia, Tuscany, Liguria, the Principality of Monaco, and France.
The Pelagos Sanctuary is the only international marine area in the Mediterranean Sea dedicated to the protection of marine mammals and their habitats and was established in 1999. The area is of fundamental importance when it comes to the conservation of whales, dolphins and other marine species that suffer from existing where maritime traffic and yachting activities can be particularly intense.
Hence Sciallino’s initiative, which is part of its broader commitment to the environment, further solidified with the launch in 2023 of the Sciallino 23 Hybrid with diesel and electric propulsion and the construction of a photovoltaic system capable of meeting most of the shipyard’s energy demand.
The Marino container, which will only be distributed free of charge by Sciallino on Monday 23rd September, is intended for the collection of used cooking oil which, if disposed of improperly, can create a surface film that prevents the oxygenation of water, a phenomenon that can seriously damage marine flora and fauna. If, on the contrary, used cooking oils are collected and recycled correctly, these substances can be transformed into biodiesel, soaps, cosmetics and other useful raw materials. Sciallino’s invitation to all sea lovers is therefore to use Marino to defend not only the waters of the Cetacean Sanctuary but the whole sea, along with its increasingly threatened ecosystem.
