THE EBERHARD & CO. THEATRE ENDS ITS PROGRAMME WITH EVENTS INSPIRED BY SUSTAINABLE INNOVATION
The programme of events and conferences at the 62nd Genoa International Boat Show opened this morning with the round table ‘Il mediatore del diporto: ruolo e attività’ (The yachting broker: role and activities), organised by Assagenti in cooperation with The Italian Marine Industry Association. The category of agents, agents’ agents and ship brokers has promptly and reactively demonstrated its ability to adapt to change and to find and generate new business chains that can be traced back to or assimilated with the role’s historical professionalism. According to a study by The European House Ambrosetti, the contribution of professional boating to the Ligurian ports and territorial economy is estimated to be €369 million – a very prudent estimate, considering the indications that are already visible for the first full year post-pandemic, which has seen a massive growth in large vessels docked in Liguria’s ports and marinas and in the ability of this key source of tourism to generate added value for the territory.
In this regard, President Paolo Pessina recalled how “an ad hoc regulation, implementing decree 151 of 6 August 2021, regularised a profession, that of the pleasure yacht broker, which until now was not substantially different from the traditional one. This marked a turning point. This was in fact a true recognition of genuinely different functions and skills, and a viaticum for further development of the role of maritime agents and brokers in a rapidly expanding sector in need of specific professionalism“.
“How Additive Manufacturing can support the technical and creative growth of the nautical industry?” this was the theme of the second Tecnomarathon organised by Amer Yachts & Studio Pegorari at the 62nd Genoa International Boat Show.
Illustrating the most recent innovations in the Additive Manufacturing sector applied to yacht construction, the event’s prestigious panel featured: Guido Zannoni, engineer and Co-founder & Technical Director Superfici scrl, Lorenzo Migliarini, South Europe territory sales manager, Massivit 3, Renato Franić, owner Velum Nautica, Enrico Dini, CEO Monolite UK, D-SHAPE LtD, Barbara Amerio, CEO of Permare, Sustainability Director – Amer Yachts and Councillor of The Italian Marine Industry Association.
From 3D-printed boats to large format prints, to the use of additive manufacturing to recreate oceanic coral reefs destroyed by pollution, it will be crucial to understand the technology in order to fully exploit its potential between industrial optimisation and sustainability.
Barbara Amerio: ‘In light of the potential that 3D printing technology presents, we have to rethink how we design, we have to re-invent design: it is almost an entirely new profession. We see the future. The level reached by this innovative technology, which is always evolving, now allows a further boost to creativity and inventiveness. Working with 3D printing is part of the ongoing effort to improve construction processes, with the aim of saving time and materials.”
In the afternoon, Alessandro Gianneschi, Vice President of The Italian Marine Industry Association and President of the components sector within the association, met with the press and answered questions about the Genoa International Boat Show’s performance and the very topical issue of raw material procurement. “The industry numbers are very positive, as are those of the visitors who have been crowding the quays and pavilion since the very first days of the event. Over the last few days, more than 100 foreign operators have arrived at the Genoa Boat Show, a number never seen before,” said Mr Gianneschi. “With regards to the well-known critical issues concerning the supply of certain raw materials, we have understood that planning and working in synergy among all the players of the supply chain is fundamental.
A conference entitled ‘The new designs of water cities: accessibility and sustainability across Liguria’, organised by the Liguria Region and Liguria International, was held on the Pavilion Terrace. A Region on the Sea committed to re-establishing and enhancing its relationship with the sea was the theme of the meeting, which provided a close look at the projects of Genoa, La Spezia and Imperia that will redesign the cities’ waterfront profile. As underlined by Pietro Piciocchi, Genoa City Council’s Councillor for Public Works, “ the new Eastern Waterfront represents the city to re-appropriating its sea and at the same time making the Genoese aware that the sea is a strategic resource for the entire city“. For La Spezia, the project illustrated by Mayor Pierluigi Peracchini is called ‘Miglio Blu’ (the Blue Mile), an intervention that not only connects all the shipbuilding realities overlooking the Gulf but is also expanding to create new spaces dedicated to research and to the enhancement of the city’s natural and cultural key elements , with the strengthening of the university pole. Also illustrated were the projects related to the sea concerning the Pilots’ Tower in the port of Genoa and the project for a new port of Imperia.
Enriching the programme were two events devoted to technology and innovation, the technical seminar organised by Atena Lombardia “Noise emissions above and below the surface”, with a focus on mega-yachts, and the in-depth discussion organised by the Marine Centre of the University of Genoa, which took stock of “Innovative solutions for on-board comfort and noise emissions at sea“.
EBERHARD & CO. THEATRE
The morning at the Eberhard & Co. Theatre started with the Genoa Chamber of Commerce, proposing ‘The quality brands of Genoa’s production excellence’, highlighting the city’s Gourmet Catering and Bartender brands as guarantees of quality. The ‘Genova Cambusa dei mari’ (Genoa Seafood Exchange) project, an experience promoting certified quality, was also discussed, with the presence of merchants operating across the network of historic shops and craftsmen involved in the initiative.
Afterwards, the Livorno Naval Academy presented the International Sailing Week to global audiences attending the Genoa International Boat Show, organised together with the City of Livorno, providing a report on the 2022 edition and an overview of it’s the Week.
A dedicated portal, an all-new Campus, and a PhD. These are the proposals presented at the 62nd Genoa International Boat Show in an event held at the Eberhard & Co Theatre; one of the events organised by The Italian Marine Industry Association. The talk entitled ‘Working in the Yachting Industry: professional career and specialised academic development opportunities’ was introduced by Stefano Pagani Isnardi, Head of the Italian Marine Industry Association’s research and market intelligence office. The theme of the talk was that of developing professional careers within a sector that is constantly growing and requires more and more specialised professional figures. This is also the basis of JobSearch, a portal on the confindustrianautica.net website developed by The Italian Marine Industry Association in cooperation with Cinco & Partners for the strategic part, and which was illustrated by Aldo Cinco. A service created to meet the needs of member companies and match supply and demand across the yachting supply chain, a portal that is open to all and free of charge. The target audience of the new University Campus in La Spezia is the next generation, presented by Mariaelena Casentini of the Promostudi which, thanks to institutional supporters but also to private individuals, has created a structure with spaces available for a series of degree courses devoted to the yachting sector, illustrated by Cesare Rizzo, as well as sports facilities and, in the not too distant future, accommodation to create a university pole entirely devoted to the sea. Claudio Ferrari from the University of Genoa concluded the meeting by illustrating the opportunities offered by the PhD in marine sciences and technologies to pursue training in the nautical engineering sector.
Following the panel held by The Ocean Race – Genova The Grand Finale entitled “Le voci del mare ascoltano l’oceano” (The voices of the sea listen to the ocean), dedicated to a project promoted by the Genoa City Council’s Social Services Department with educational and recreational-sports paths aimed at young athletes, featuring sea-related activities, audiences were treated to testimonies from across the territory concerning initiatives and innovations in line with development policies, during the event “La Liguria verso Agenda 2030 – dalla “crescita blu” ad una economia blu sostenibile” (Liguria’s Road to Agenda 2030 – from “blue growth” to a sustainable blue economy), organised by the Liguria Region and Liguria International. The event took stock of development initiatives and policies at a regional level aimed at achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These goals, contained in a policy document, are to be achieved by 2030 by all UN member states. In order for this to be decisive, the 2030 Agenda will have to be implemented in a concrete way at global, national and regional level by all those involved.
Paola Carnevale, EIA and Sustainable Development Sector – Environment and Civil Protection Department of the Liguria Region, explained the initiatives undertaken by the Region regarding this issue: “The Liguria Region has already begun a long journey inspired by sustainability and sustainable development. Following the adoption of the 2030 Agenda, a strategy has been drawn up at a regional level that identifies the sea as the pivotal theme of our territorial policies. Sustainability is an important path to take, with the aim of adapting to the challenges that will arise in all economic sectors”.
‘The Water Code’, which recounted HELPCODE‘s experiences, projects and activities for the sustainable management of water resources, ended the programme of events at the Eberhard & Co. Theatre. From Italy to Mozambique, via Cambodia, projects related to education, sustainability and the promotion of sustainable development, environmental protection and the mitigation of the anthropogenic impact on rivers, lakes and seas around the world were highlighted, with a focus on how to face new challenges arising across this vast field, helping the most affected countries and the most vulnerable groups. Speakers for HELPCODE were Matteo Cavalleroni, Secretary General, Paolo Gomiero, Mozambique Project Manager, Alessandro Bartoletti, Italy Project Manager, joining Pascal Granero from the Princess Charlene Foundation, Arianna Aliconti, Marine Biologist, and moderator Roberta Pellizzoli, HELPCODE Mozambique Programme Manager.
